Certificate in Working with Homeless Populations: Practice Fundamentals - Winter 2013

The CHF is offering 21 scholarships at $1,200 each to for the winter 2013 program, which covers approximately two-thirds of the total program cost.

The CHF and the Faculty of Social Work at the University of Calgary have developed a certificate program to help front-line employees and volunteers work towards helping people end their homelessness. Through this Certificate you will be introduced to a variety of approaches and practices, and gain a broader understanding of homelessness through an analysis on current trends in the homeless-serving sector.

Scholarship eligibility requirements

  • You must be involved in direct service delivery to those experiencing or at-risk of homelessness (as an employee or a volunteer).
  • Due to the limited number of scholarships available, scholarships will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis (provided applicants meet eligibility requirements), so it is recommended that interested applicants apply early.
  • Depending on the number of applicants, the CHF/UofC reserves the right to limit the number scholarships issued to the staff or volunteers of any individual organization or agency to a maximum of three.
  • Scholarship applications must be received by Wednesday, December 19, 2012.

How to apply for a scholarship

The University of Calgary will be administering the scholarships on the CHF's behalf. Please note that registering for the program and applying for the scholarship are two separate processes.

2012 Arthur R. Smith Awards 

The Arthur R. Smith Awards were created in the name of the founder of the Calgary Homeless Foundation as a way to recognize and honor innovative, committed and caring front-line staff and volunteers within the homeless-serving system.  

We would like to acknowledge and thank Mr. James Stanford for generously sponsoring the Arthur R. Smith Awards for five years (2012-2017)

Winners were honored at a private luncheon with Mrs.Betty Ann Smith and Dr. John Rook, President and CEO of the Foundation and they were introduced at the Community Summit on March 6, 2013.

Congratulations to the recipients of the 2012 Arthur R. Smith Awards, which were awarded on Feb. 28, 2013. We received 29 nominations.  Winners received $2,000 per award. The categories and award winners are:

  • Marlies Bird: A volunteer with the Calgary Dream Centre who has demonstrated a long-term commitment to volunteerism within the homeless sector.
  • Chloe Neumann: A front-line staff person with Boys and Girls Clubs of Calgary who demonstrated a strong commitment to Housing First and the goal to end homelessness.
  • Alberta Works Outreach Team: A front-line team that demonstrated a strong commitment to Housing First and the goal to end homelessness.

2011 Arthur R. Smith Awards

The Arthur R. Smith Awards were created in the name of the founder of the Calgary Homeless Foundation to recognize and honour front-line staff and volunteers who provide housing and support to those at risk of or experiencing homelessness in Calgary.

Congratulations to the recipients of the 2011 Arthur R. Smith Awards, which were awarded on April 12, 2012. We received 32 nominations.  Winners received a total of $2,000 per award. The categories and award winners are:

  • Dennis Halstead: A volunteer whose work makes a significant contribution in any way to those without a home
  • Scott Caling Last: A front-line staff person who provides housing and/or support to those at risk of or experiencing homelessness
  • Inn from the Cold Case Management Team: A front-line team that provides housing and/or support to those at risk of or experiencing homelessness

About the Award Recipients and Nominees

To recognize that the awards were postponed in 2009, there were two recipients for each category in 2010. The recipients were announced during a lunch-time ceremony at the Community Summit on Thursday, March 11, 2011. Each award recipient received $2,000.
