Alan Norris, 2019 Trail Blazer Legacy Award Recipient
Alan was born in Scotland and moved to Calgary in 1980 as a newly designated Chartered Accountant with Deloitte. He joined Carma Developers in 1983 and became Chief Executive Officer in 1994. In 2011, under Alan’s leadership Carma merged with Brookfield Homes to create Brookfield Residential, the flagship North American residential property company of Brookfield Asset Management.
More recently, Alan has begun to leverage the company’s expertise to expand Brookfield’s overall mixed-use development capability and to capitalize on the unique opportunities that exist in the market today.
As Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Brookfield Properties’ Development Group, Alan oversees the management and strategic direction of its residential and mixed-use development businesses in the U.S. and Canada. Under his leadership, the company’s residential asset base grew to over $4.8 billion and the overall employee base to more than 1,400 people.
Today, the company operates in 16 major North American markets. Alan holds a B.A. degree in accounting and economics and two Chartered Accountant Designations, Scotland and Canada.
Alan’s active involvement in the community includes chairing the recently completed RESOLVE Campaign to raise $120 million for affordable housing in Calgary, a collaborative campaign representing nine different agencies that are addressing homelessness. He is also past Chairman of Calgary Homeless Foundation.
